Request For Enhancement: Always show the vertical scrollbar to improve performance, as it might save an extra layout. When there is no content to scroll the scrollbar should still be shown, but with no scrolling bit on it (disabled).

Mozilla/Firefox preservation of the vertical scrollbar would make browser viewport width consistent among browsers. Apart from possible performance gains there is an issue with some sites that have content centered. These pages show the issue when viewed with current Mozilla and Firefox browsers.

The links provided above allow you to switch between two pages. They share the same code. The one you are in right now should fit in the height of your browser window. In Mozilla/Firefox that means that you won't see a vertical scrollbar along the side of the page. The other page is taller than most people's screen resolution to make sure it will force Mozilla/Firefox to bring up the vertical scrollbar.

Switching between pages will make the container shift to the left as the scrollbar appears and back to the right as it goes away. This will not happen in either IE5.x, IE6 and Safari 1.2 as those browsers preserve the vertical scrollbar at all times.
